Abstract

The slow growth of employment in the formal sector compared with the development of labour force causes the informal sector to dominate the Indonesian economic system. Nevertheless, the applied policy has not been expected though the informal sector could be the saviour or safety valve for the labour problem. The aim of this study is to find out the informal sector role in improving the society earnings throuhg the level earning contribution approach from informal sector to household earning A hundred and eighteen informans come from three villages and districs. Each village represents one distric in District zone of Kulon Progo that Is the Northern, Middle and Southern area. The result of the research Indicates that the production of the informal sector gives the contribution 10 the total household earning 50 -100 percent to the worker with the Job status in the informal sector as the primary job, and 10-40 percent to the worker with the job status in the informal sector as the part-time Job. The worker in the informal sector ussaly work 8 hours a day. This result gives a point that informal sector is capable to bring the opportunity to the society in obtaining production and overcoming unemployment problem.
