Abstract
Poverty exists because people's individual and collective needs are not met. theoretically there are three types of poverty: absolute, relative, cultural and structural. effort to eradicate poverty has been done by both goverment and non goverment organizations. social institutions are part of non-goverment organization which are established and run by the civil society. Social institution both in the urban and the rural areas, have many different activities. The activities of the social institution in the rural areas includes "arisan" of money, of goods, of manpower, savings and borrowing of money or goods, collective saving and "jimpitan". All these activities help maintain their believed norms of the social institutions. social institutions have both social resources and capital which have the potential to become social energy. if the social energy can be transformed into material or financial resources,it is very valuable. in turn, therefore, social institutions play a very important role in eradicating poverty in the rural areas.
