Abstract
The economic crisis in Indonesia seems to have seriously affected both the middle and low classes as reflected in their poor quality of social, economic and spiritual life. One of the consequences is the rising number of tramps on the crossroads in many big towns and cities. This has caused social problems and anxiety, such as traffic and security problems as well as the beauty of the towns or cities. This has also resulted in bad effect on the part of the tramps themselves, particularly the young ones. Actually, the government and social organizations have already worked hard to train them to work, but the number is getting bigger and bigger. One way of solving this problem is to change their way of life. The research aimed to find out the types of the tramps or street children and why they chose to be tramps. The research was qualitative in nature and involved 26 tramps in Yogyakarta. The snowball-sampling technique was used, and the first sample was the tramp on Timoho Street. This research shows three different types of street children The first are those who have no relation with their families. The second are those who still go home every day. The third are those who are accompanied by their parents living on the street. Each of them show differences in family lives, lives on the street, norms and values in the society, perceptions of life, social relations and understanding of rumah singgah (tramp homestay). The different types of tramps or street children may require different treatments. Key Words: the types of the tramps, treatment.
